Tips To Remember In Wearing Button Down Shirts
The button down shirts are the go-to garment for just about every occasion, from a classic white paired with jeans for errand running to a deep red to complement a basic black business suit for the office. However, just because this is an easy garment to wear, it doesn't mean that anything goes when you wear it. There are a few key rules to consider any time you wear button down shirts. Read on and take notes so that the next time you wear your button downs you’ll going to stand out in the fashion world.
A Fine Fit
The fit is everything when you are wearing a button down top. Not only is this important to make sure that you aren't wearing a shirt so tight it shows every lump and bump, but also because buttons will literally pop open (usually at the most inconvenient time) if your button down doesn't fit properly. Even a shirt that's too loose is an issue; it will look as though you're wearing your boyfriend's button-down top straight from the bedroom. The top should slightly hug your shape, but provide a nice smooth silhouette.
Keep It Simple
When you are using a button down shirt to accentuate your favorite business suit or to add sophistication to a pair of embellished jeans, keep it simple. In fact, the very appeal of a button down top lies in its simplicity. If there is anything else funky about your outfit, even if it's just a super long pair of dangle earrings, then keep the style and color of the shirt simple (think solid and staid).
Length
The purpose of a button down top is to look well put together and, in many instances, professional. This is not the place to show off your midriff or let loose with a ton of cleavage (though a slight peek is fine if you are headed to happy hour). Therefore, the general rule of thumb for button down tops is that they at least hit around the hip area. Anything shorter is going to make you look unbalanced, while anything longer is OK (as long as it doesn't go to your knees).
Wrinkles Are Unacceptable
A button down shirt should be crisp and neat at all times. You are breaking a major fashion rule in general -- as well as a button down rule -- if you dare to walk out of the house in a wrinkled top, even for a simple trip to the corner store. If you aren't the type to iron, then purchase a cotton blend that doesn't require ironing, throw it in the dryer for a minute or two, slide it on and go about your business.
